Term 4 Week 6
Life at St Monica’s is never quiet! So many exciting experiences and opportunities are happening all the time. Last Wednesday night we celebrated the gifted and talented musical students with a special performance night for families and friends. Their confidence and excitement in performing and celebrating all the hard work and practice that they have undertaken was just wonderful. I was so proud of each of them and would like to thank Sarah Tamblyn, our amazing music teacher, for co-ordinating our private music tutor lessons throughout the year and then overseeing the musical performance night. We are blessed to have so many gifted music tutors working with our students each week. Bravo to everyone!
Next week on Tuesday, 10 students in from our Year 3 and 4 classes have been selected to represent our school in a Schools’ Tennis Final at the clay courts on Memorial Drive. We wish them every success in this event.
Yesterday, St Monica’s sent 44 students from Years 3 to 6 to Bridgestone Stadium to participate in the SACPSSA Athletics Carnival. So many students returned in the afternoon proudly wearing the ribbons that they had won during the day. Our Year 6 girls won the Aged Group Champion. Congratulations to all who participated with enthusiasm and determination. Thank you to the parents who attended and assisted with official duties on the day and thank you to Jim Mihelios for overseeing the organisation of the event.
Next week a separate letter will come out with information about the End of Year Community Celebration. We are again blessed and very grateful that we can access the amazing facilities at Kildare College. Please keep an eye out for it in your emails (maybe even in your junk box!).
The planning for the redevelopment of the front of school playground is finally moving forward. The process is a bit slow at times, but I am confident that now CESA have given their support to the plans we are able to move forward. I have loved watching the development of these plans because it has included the student’s voice in the design process. The Student Voice group have taken feedback from their classes to the meetings with the landscape designers and then be a part of the review process. Alterations were made after a very inclusive suggestion of making this space accessible to anyone who has mobility issues with this inclusion of a ramp and play stations that would be easy for them to engage with. The voice of a young person is so powerful and important for us ‘oldies’ to hear. I look forward to sharing the design with you once the final modifications have been made.
I hope there are many dads, grandads and special blokes able to join the Bowls Night on Friday 2 December at the Walkerville Bowls Club. Last year all the gentlemen that attended had a very social and enjoyable time. The leadership of the school will be personally delivering the pizza dinner to these determined bowlers. Go Jack High!
God’s blessings,
Emily Sayer
This morning the school gathered to celebrate Mass to mark the beginning of Advent which will begin this coming Sunday. The season of Advent is the four weeks leading into Christmas where we prepare ourselves for Christmas. After a rousing rendition of "Santa Clause is coming to town" by Ms Morris and Father Kym, we were reminded how we use Advent to prepare to be more like Jesus. When on earth, Jesus promised his followers he would come again, and the Gospel story reminded us of this and the importance to be ready. At this mass the classes Advent Wreaths were blessed and our school's Vinnie Christmas Appeal was officially launched. More details regarding Christmas Appeal will come via SeeSaw

This year the Year 6’s went to the Broadview Bowling Club for their retreat day. During this day the Year 6’s were required to complete a set of tasks that included making a collage and an I-Movie for our Graduation Ceremony. We had to complete these activities that showed our time at St Monica’s Parish School. The I-Movie was chosen to represent our schooling while our collage was made to show our personal lives and they will be displayed at our Graduation Dinner.
While at the Retreat, Year 6s took part in a range of activities including lawn bowls. Erik and Yash both particularly enjoyed this activity and claimed it was an awesome time learning to bowl. It wasn’t just children though a teacher named Maisie also got in on the action, ‘I had a great time my favourite part of the day was listening to everyone’s reflections upon their time at St Monica’s. I thought that even though there were new students this year everyone was still really supportive of each other.’
While we were there the bowling club gave us pies, quiches, sausage rolls and fruit. Overall, it was a good day.

On the 22nd of November, the year 5’s and 6’s went on an excursion to Parliament House and the Central Markets.
Firstly, we went to Parliament House and whilst eating healthy snack, we were greeted and interviewed by channel 7 News. At Parliament House, we went on a tour with Lucy Hood who is the MP of Adelaide. We learnt about the different rooms in Parliament and their jobs in Parliament.
After the tour, we walked to Victoria Square, had recess and played some fun games like Duck, Duck, Goose. After our recess break, we walked to the Central Markets where we were split into 6 groups. We were then given 20 dollars to buy healthy exotic food such as Lychee, Nashi Pear and Dragonfruit. We got to look around at all the different shops and stores.
Once we finished, we got onto our bus and went back to school. By that time it was 2:30 pm so we soon went home.
Overall, it was a really fun day and we all enjoyed it very much!

Last week some of our talented musicians celebrated their skills by performing at our Instrumental Music Concert. For many of our violin, guitar, voice and piano students, this was their first experience performing to an audience. All students were well prepared and performed beautifully!
If you are interested in enrolling your child in instrumental lessons for 2023, please contact Sarah Tamblyn for further information. Enrolment forms will be sent out in the new year with your child's stationery pack.

Remembrance Day 11th November 2022
At the Walkerville Remembrance Day Ceremony this year, our students were presented with a book for the Library from the Pascoe with the following inscription -
‘Each ANZAC and Remembrance Day services at the Walkerville Memorial Garden my mother laid a book alongside the wreaths and flowers, in remembrance of those who served our country during times of war and who have passed on. After the service my ither would give the book to a different attending school group each year. My mother, Rena Pascoe who was born on the 12th of Ma 1921 passed away on the 20th of September 2020 just short of her 100th birthday. Mum served in the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force during World War 2. This year is the 101st anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force. My Mum went to school on a horse and in her own life time learned of the first person to go into space and later, another who landed on the moon.
A lot happened during her 99 years!
My wife and I wish to continue my mother’s tradition of presenting a book after each service to a school in the Walkerville area.
We wish you love, peace and a wonderful life. Ian and Yvonne Pascoe
LEST WE FORGET’
The book was Australian Geographic – Australia’s Incredible Insects for which we thank the Pascoe family.
St Monica's Parish School invites all dads/grandfathers/special blokes to a fun night at Walkerville Bowling Club on Friday 2 December 2022 from 6.00pm to 11.00pm. Cost for the night is $15.00 which includes lawn bowls and pizza. To make a booking please contact the office.
Last weekend Jacob was welcomed into the Catholic Church community through the Sacrament of Baptism. Known within the Church as the first Initation Sacrament, through Baptism people are blessed with the Holy Spirt and initiated into a faith filled life, where they are called to live in the footsteps of Jesus. Congratualtion to Jacob and his family for this special celebration.
On Friday's at Recess in the hall we gave Pokémon. You can bring your Pokémon cards from home if you have them, and you can battle, but no switching cards (trading). We like it because you can relax inside, show off your cards, and battle your friends. Watch out for the Year 2's because we rock at it!
