Term 3 Week 10
Dear Families,
“Boy, that was fun!” - Year 2 student
I overheard the above quote from a Year 2 student after he participated in the Year 5 Soccer Challenge at St Monica’s Fair. He was pretty proud of himself for the kicks he did and the number of times he connected with one of the targets.
I think this quote is one I would like to borrow to summarise my first term at St Monica’s. It was certainly a different start with the snap lock down but once we were back into the ‘normal’ business of learning and teaching, great things happened. During this term the students and staff have celebrated Book Week and Italian Day, engaged in Yoga lessons with Tammy, developed our skills in Tennis with Martin, our Tournament of the Minds team worked hard to develop their presentation and then gave it their very best during the performances last weekend. We have had three students complete their initiation into the Catholic church through the sacramental program, our Years 3 to 6 students participated in the Touch Carnival, and we had representatives in the Cross Country event. But wait there’s more! We have celebrated St Monica and St Mary of the cross MacKillop’s feast days, held an amazingly successful St Monica’s Fair, worked with Chris Crebbin to create impressive art pieces that are influenced by indigenous culture. We also put together a different way of sharing Student Led Learning Conversations and loved sharing the students’ learning with their families. Students have cooked, created, designed, planned and constructed some very impressive learning tasks and outcomes. We participated in a Women in STEM breakfast both at St Monica’s and at a Catholic Education event at the Adelaide Convention Centre. I am sure that I have missed a few more events but what a busy and productive term we have had. I would like to thank the staff (both teaching and our support staff) for their enthusiasm in being involved in events that build community and offer different learning opportunities for our children.
The staff will be attending professional learning opportunities this Friday (24 September) on our school closure day. Time has been allocated for updating training in the very important area of recognising and responding to abuse and neglect and also in training in engaging with our system wide online learning platform – SEQTA.
Student Led Learning Conversations
I would like to thank families for your commitment to being involved in the alternative Student Led Learning Conversations. The feedback that teachers have received from families about their child’s learning goals and how they have gone about achieving them have been very positive and supportive. We will plan that next year we are able to share these with all families in person.
I would also like to thank each family for their very warm welcome to St Monica’s. I am slowly recognising cars at end of school pick up and who belongs with whom. My hope is that through the coming holidays that you all find some time to spend together and ‘chill’. Have a PJ day or go for a walk or make a cubby house under your table with sheets and cushions – have fun together.
Take care of each other and we look forward to seeing you return on Monday 11 October ready for a busy but exciting term.
Blessings,
Emily
Congratulations to Genna, Samuel and Annabelle who has completed their Sacraments of Initiation in recent weeks. These sacraments see the candidates receive the blessing of the Holy Spirt while also receiving the body of Jesus in the form of communion for the first time. We wish to extend a congratulations to them all as they continue on their faith journey. May they continue to be blessed and guided by the Holy Spirt and all its gifts.
We will begin the Greenacres Walkerville Parish 2021/2022 Sacramental Preparation Program for children wishing to celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist with an Information Session on Sunday 17 October, after Sunday Mass at 10:30am at St Martin’s Church Hall. We ask that you consider joining us for Mass first at 9:30am at St Martin’s Church.
This session is for both parents and child/ren. It is an opportunity for you to hear about what our Parish offers and then decide whether you and your child would like to be a part of the Program.
If you are considering being part of our 2021/2022 Program attendance at this meeting is essential, although coming to this session does not commit you to participating in the Program.
If you have any questions please contact Rebecca at the Parish Office on telephone 8261 6200 or admin@gwparish.org.au.
This term, our school introduced Meditation into all classrooms. Most religions have a tradition of meditation of some form and Christianity is no exception. In the scripture we read "but when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father". We interpret this to be a contemplative, medative style of prayer, spent alone with our God. Reaseach shows that meditation has many spiritual, social and emotional beifits and we are excited to gift all our students and teachers with these benifits.
Congratulations to our Year 5/6 team: Sarah, Kiana, Lily, Erik, Emilia, Rianne and Aditi who performed at Flinders University in September. The team auditioned and then trained for 6 weeks to solves a series of complex problems. This team showed great teamwork, communication, organisation, persistence and humour. They used their problem solving and creativity to transform the story of Aladin to a modern-day tale about the devices taking over the world!

The Years 6s concluded their unit of work on Enterprise Education with selling their products at the St Monica’s Fair. The Year 6s learnt skills of running a business from marketing, profit and loss spreadsheets, advertising and selling. This was part of their Mathematics and HASS curriculum. They had fabulous stalls selling hot chips, popcorn, ice-cream sandwiches, cookies, cupcakes, pizza scrolls and orange juice! The money raised will go towards the Mary Mackillop Foundation.

On Monday the 20th of September we got to go to the women in STEM breakfast at the convention centre. To get selected we had to write a letter to Mrs Sayer explaining why we should be one of the 3 girls chosen to go. At the convention centre they had a lovely breakfast while some special women who have a career in STEM talked about their experiences. They answered some of the questions students from some of the schools who also went to the breakfast had asked. There were also 2 fun games of Kahoot! They were both about women in STEM. One of them were women who had important roles and careers in STEM and the other was some inventions that we use every day, made by women. There was cool prizes for different activities that we did (like the Kahoot!) and all the students had a great time and lots of fun.
