Term 3 Week 5
Week 5 already and what another exciting week it was at St Monica’s.
This week we have celebrated Book Week and Italian Day together. With the theme of Old World, New World, Other Worlds, we had a plethora of characters come to visit our school on Monday for our parade. We are putting together a video of photos that were taken on the day so that you may also enjoy the fun and excitement that is Book Week. You may be interested to know that the Children’s Book Council of Australia has been co-ordinating Book Week since 1945. That is a long time and I won’t share how many costumes and dress ups I have participated in over my teaching career. My love of reading goes back to listening to my father read to my siblings and myself at night time before bed. I still have some of these books and have shared them with my own children when they were young. These times that you can spend together are priceless. I hope that many of you also have the same experience. I wonder what the theme will be for 2022?
A special thanks must go to Deb Lauder, our wonderful librarian, and Maddalena Eden our amazing Italian teacher who co-ordinated the day for us. The performance the children watched was engaging and the children were a wonderful audience and the gelato that we all enjoyed was divine. One of the best that I have enjoyed.
Thank you to the families who participated in the Living Learning Leading Framework survey. I look forward to being able to share with you a snapshot of the feedback provided by students, families and staff about how St Monica’s is progressing and what some future actions and goals could be. This is important data to utilise as we work on our next Strategic Plan and Annual Improvement Plan.
Soon Spring will be with us. I do look forward to the length of the days increasing but not the increase in the pollen. As is part of our uniform policy, children and teachers will need to wear their hats whilst outside from the 1 September onwards. Please ensure that your children have a hat in their bag and that it is named. We want all children to be active in their break times but if they are not wearing a hat, they will need to stay in a shaded area.
Whilst speaking about the uniform, I have noticed that there are some variations to our agreed uniform being worn to school. Wearing a uniform shows that you belong, brings pride to our community and is about equality and inclusivity. As a mum, I know that there are times things happen that may mean your child has to wear something that is not according to our uniform policy or he or she may need to wear the different uniform for a day. If this is the case, please write a note to the teacher and I know that you will work with us to have the uniform sorted as quickly as possible.
Have a wonderful week ahead.
Blessings,
Emily
Every Thursday at recess time we make soup for the Adelaide Day Centre. We make soup for the people who are homeless to have a healthy and delicious meal for the day. We prepare for soup making by washing our hands, then some people peel or cut the vegetables. Here are some pictures of us preparing the soup and of us collecting ingredients from our school veggie garden!
Angel and Gigi – Year 6
If you would like to donate ingredients for soup making it would be most appreciated!
This week we celebrated Book Week and Italian Day with dressing up, an assembly, Book Week parade, buddy activies, gelati and finished the day with a performance. Thank you to all families for the wonderful effort put towards creating some amzing costumes.
Students and teachers alike all enjoyed a friendly game of netball this week. After a fierce compettion and few sore old bodies, the teachers came out the winners. It was a great way to spend a lunch time out in the sunshine.
Premier’s Reading Challenge 2021
An urgent reminder that there are only 14 days until the 2021 Premier’s Reading Challenge finishes on 3 September. Completed Challenge Forms can be brought to the Library or the Front Office at any time. Congratulations to those students who have already completed this year’s Challenge.
We have completely ran out of soup supplies! If you are able to donate time to make soup or vegetables, please send them in with the students.

I therefore ask you to say goodbye to your child at the back gate of the school and we will have staff present to support their transition to class. If you do need to speak to your child’s teacher for a specific reason, it would be best to make a time for a phone call at this current time.
Mask wearing is a new requirement by SA Health that has been mentioned on in the media and students in secondary schools/campuses will be required to wear masks whilst indoors, whilst congregating and when on school buses and public transport. Staff in Primary and Secondary schools will also be required to wear masks when they are not teaching or interacting with students.
