Term 3 Week 3
Dear Community,
I am very excited and proud to contribute to my first St Monica’s newsletter. It certainly wasn’t the start I would have ever dreamed of but that is what life does to us at times. Thank you to those who were able to provide feedback to us about the online learning experience. I will be working with the other members of the leadership team to analyse the data from staff, students and families and what learnings can we take from it.
I shall take a moment to be a bit self-indulgent and share a bit of my story with you. I have worked in the Catholic Education system for over 35 years now (don’t want to give my age away too easily) and have been connected with nine school communities in a variety of roles ranging from class teacher, REC, APRIM, Deputy Principal, Head of Primary and Principal. I am married to the very wonderful Max, and we are very proud of our two children Rebecca and James.
My passion in my professional life is wellbeing and ensuring that all members of the community I am working in know that they are included, feel safe to contribute, feel safe to ask questions and that their story is known. My first reflections of my time here include: how happy and inclusive the students are, what a hardworking and resilient group of educators work here and how welcoming everyone is. I feel absolutely blessed to be a part of the St Monica’s community. I look forward to meeting more of you over the coming weeks.
Last week you would have received a letter and link to the Living Learning Leading Framework survey for families. I would encourage each family to share their thoughts and perceptions of how St Monica’s is going. Staff and the students will also be asked to contribute, so the data provided will give us a holistic view of our school community and help to inform us in our future planning.
Next week we celebrate Catholic Schools Open Week. We had planned for an exciting open evening for Student Led Learning Conversations, but we have had to reschedule these to later in the term due to the restrictions in place and the numbers we are allowed to have onsite. If you could please put in the date 8 September, 3.00-6.00pm in your calendars for this event. More information will be sent home closer to the time.
We have also had to postpone our Principal’s Tour and we are now offering individual tours to families who would like to see St Monica’s in action. If you know anyone who is keen to see our school, please ask them to contact Annette Giacomelli in the front office.
In our calendar we were scheduled for a pupil free day on Monday 23 August but we have now rescheduled this to the last day of the term, Friday 24 September. The staff will be engaging with a variety of PD opportunities in the areas of Child Protection, online documentation of learning and the Australian Curriculum. OSHC will be available for families to access if you need.
Thank you so much again for your warm welcome to St Monica’s and I do look forward to meeting more of you in the coming weeks.
God’s blessings,
Emily Sayer
This term we were blessed to welcome 14 new students; Amarella, Jiya, Isla, Dilsher, Eleanor, Elodie, Celestine, Yibo, Novak, Austin, Simart, Felix, Viktor, Mile and their familes into our school community. We are so proud of how they have all settled into school life.
Congratulations to our 2021 TOM team! There were many creative and clever applications and auditions this year which made it very hard to choose the team.
Well done to:
Lily, Sarah and Kiana (Year 6)
Aditi, Rhianne, Erik and Emilia (Year 5)

Inclusive Education and Wellbeing
Preparation for First Eucharist will occur on Tuesday the 10 and 17 August at St Martin's Catholic Church at 7pm.
The 2021 Adelaide Diocesan Assembly will be held on 17 and 18 September at Cabra Dominican College. The Diocesan Assembly is a gathering of representatives from the various communities and agencies of the Archdiocese of Adelaide to discuss the life of the church and make recommendations. This assembly will help to prepare our diocese for the upcoming Plenary Council. In preparation for the assembly is the Church is asking for all people to have their say. To find out more or to have your say go to the Adelaide Diocesan Assembly website.
We hace completely ran out of soup supplies! If you are able to donate time to make soup or vegetables, please send them in with the students.
During Vacation Care the children were tasked with taking photos of anything they liked - with a twist. Georgia and Imogen from year 5 offered their artistic expertise and the children produced some amazing photos!
Our Library Shelves are looking a little bare at the moment. This is because there are many overdue Library books. Could you please check at home and in school bags and return any found as soon as possible? Overdue notices will be sent out next week.
Premier’s Reading Challenge 2021
Congratulations to those students who have already completed this year’s Challenge.
Completed PRC Reading Records can be returned at any time.
Books in the Library which are on the PRC List, are easily identifiable with the appropriate level stickers on the spine. Reading for the 2021 Challenge finishes 3 September 2021.
Further information about the Premier’s Reading Challenge can be found at www.prc.sa.edu.au
Thank you from Vinnies
The St Vincent de Paul Society’s mission is to live the Gospel message, serving Christ by helping those in need in a non-judgemental way. By showing love, respect, justice, hope and joy, we hope to shape a more just and compassionate society. Vinnies offers ‘a hand up’ rather than a hand out to people in need by respecting their dignity, sharing hope, and encouraging them to take control of their own destiny.
Thank you to the students, parents and staff of St Monica’s Parish School for their generous donations of warm clothing and blankets which will be distributed to those in need through Fred’s Vans and the Women’s Crisis Centre.
On behalf of the Companions who will receive your donations, we thank you.
- AFL AusKick
Tuesday – Weeks 4 - 9 (9 Sessions) - children are to be collected promptly after each session via North East Road carpark gate. Cost: $100 (Free with sport Voucher)
- Art Club
Thursday – Weeks 3 – 8 (6 Sessions) - children are to be collected promptly after each session via the Brunswick Street gate. Cost: $90.00
Please note that if your child is not collected promptly following the session, they will be booked into Out of School Hours Care and a fee will be charged.
Please note that some government restrictions are in place at present and this will mean normal access to the school site by parents will not be possible during this time. I therefore ask you to say goodbye to your child at the back gate of the school and we will have staff present to support their transition to class. If you do need to speak to your child’s teacher for a specific reason, it would be best to make a time for a phone call at this current time.
Mask wearing is a new requirement by SA Health that has been mentioned on in the media and students in secondary schools/campuses will be required to wear masks whilst indoors, whilst congregating and when on school buses and public transport. Staff in Primary and Secondary schools will also be required to wear masks when they are not teaching or interacting with students.
We'd love to know what you think of the new St Monica's Newsletter (its digital - so you can view it on your phone). Please take part in this quick two question survey so that we can improve and confirm how many people are reading ....

Saint Mary of the Cross Feast Day
This week, classes celebrated Mary Mackillop who's feast day is celebrated on 8 August within the Catholic Church. Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop is Australias first saint. As the founder of the Sister of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart, Mary with the help of Father Tenison Woods began educating children in 1866 in a stable school in Penola, SA. This was the first of what would grow into 1,700 Catholic Schools across Australia. Her faithfulness to God, generosity and compassion for the poor and bravery to advocate for justice, still make her a fantastic role model for us all.
