Term 3 Week 1 2023
Welcome back to all students and families to what is going to be an exciting and busy term! We especially welcome all our new Reception students Illeana, Ashton, Chloe,Zayn, Alonzo, Aiden, Leo, Jory, Ava, Zoe L, Domenic, Sophia, Charlotte, Pahaul, Salvatore, Zoe P, Hudson, Adeline & Eva, Ms Julie Jurkovic (our new Reception teacher) and Oscar in Year 1 and Sera in Year 2. We also welcome Ms Maeve Moore who is with us this term as a pre-service teacher in Year 2 ML. Our blessings and best wishes are with you all as you begin your time with us.
You would have received an email and hard copy letter regarding the Carly Ryan parent workshop that is being held here at St Monica’s on Wednesday 2 August, commencing at 6.30pm, I strongly recommend this informative and impactful workshop to all families. Sonya shares her very powerful and emotional story of her daughter Carly and the dangers of social media. As a mum of young adults, I learnt so much about online social behaviours, how easy it is to be tricked into believing the profile that is posted by another person. It is easy to think my children are young and I don’t need to know this, or it won’t happen to my kids but being educated and empowered with this information is a great starting point for conversations with your children when the time and questions arise. There is no cost involved in attending and there is a creche being offered for school aged children.

I mentioned at the end of last term that the front of school redevelopment would commence during the holidays but as you can see it did not. We have a new date for the commencement of works and this is now Monday 14 August. The stages have been swapped around and the work will commence in the playground space. Once we have finalised the action plan for entry to the school and adapted play spaces, I will inform all families. It is anticipated that the works will take up most of Term 3 so we will need to be patient people during the process.
You will be receiving a letter from me concerning an annual survey called Living Learning Leading Survey. We invite all families to contribute to this survey as it provides us with important data about how we are performing as a school and where we should target our energy, time and resources for improvement. The survey will only take between 3-5 minutes and when you have completed it, please take a screen shot of the final submission page and email it to info@stmonica.catholic.edu.au to be in a draw for a $50 voucher for Palace Nova cinemas. This is a thank you for your assistance.
Please put Wednesday 23 August, 2.30-5.00pm in your calendar. That afternoon we will be holding our St Monica’s Learning Expo and all families and friends are invited into the school to view the amazing learning of our students. We will have chess experts showcasing their knowledge, students who will demonstrate their coding skills with Bee Bots and Spheros, musical performances and so much more. Invitations will be sent home next week.
Included with this newsletter is a link to the Catholic School Parents of SA Charter. This important document recognises the significant partnership between schools and families and identifies some expectations of both groups in this relationship. As a school community we are blessed to be working with each family, who are always the first and most important educators of their child/ren.

School uniforms are worn to represent community but also equality. We aim to work with all families to ensure that the correct school uniform is worn by all students. We recognise that at times, there may be some unavoidable challenges, and in these cases, we ask you to be in communication with your child(s) teacher. For further information in regard to the school's uniform policy please refer to our web site. We thank you for your support with this matter.
Regards
Emily and Bronwyn
The parent community has established a private group on Facebook that facilitates the trading of second-hand uniform items.
Please visit www.facebook.com/groups/stmonicasbuyswapsell and request to join the group if you are interested.
The page is ideal for selling items in good condition that your child has outgrown, or to sell items if your child is moving on. Simply post images and your contact details. Alternatively, you can join the group to take advantage of the pre-loved items that become available.
For those of you who are not on Facebook, please contact the P&F pandf.stmonicas@gmail.com and they will assist you with the sale of items.
Please note the sale of old-style uniform items is not allowed. St Monica's Parish School does not manage this page and takes no responsibility for any private sales.
Thank you to all our OSHC educators for all the wonderful work you do.
On Wednesday 26th July it was National OSHC Educators Day. We celebrated the amazing staff members we have in our OSHC program with a party in after school care. We created a heart display where children had the opportunity to share how they feel about the staff members with words like amazing, patient, loving, and kind.
Our may be aware that World Youth Day is being celebrated here in Adealide on Saturday the 5 of August. Parishs has been invited to host smaller celebrations in recognition of this. Our parish is hosting a youth Mass on Sunday 6 pf August at the 9.30am Mass. In preparation for the mass, the parish is holding a choir practice on 1 of August at St Martins’ Church at 5.00p.m. All young people are welcome to attend this choir practice and then as family to come and celebrate the Youth Mass which will be followed by sharing of food and mingling together.

We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which St Monica’s learn, work and play.
May we walk gently on this land acknowledging the Kaurna people's deep spiritual connection with their country.
We pay our respects to Kaurna elders past and present and commit to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation.
