Term 2 Week 6
It is with much excitement that I would like to share with you that we are starting a new class at St Monica’s. In Term 3 we have 15 excited Reception children joining us as they transition to ‘big’ school. This is the first time in quite a few years that we have had this many students to commence in Term 3 and they will start as a class group in what is currently our Music Room. We are busily co-ordinating the refurbishment of this learning space so it is ready for some exciting and creative learning experiences.
We also welcome Jade Ryan to our community as the teacher for this class. She is very excited and can’t wait to meet her students and their families.
Disco and Wine and Cheese Night – 24 June 2022
We have sent out flyers to all families inviting the children to the school disco (R-2 – 6.15-7.30pm and 3-6 from 7.45-9.00pm) and adults to a wine tasting and cheese night in the school library. A creche is being offered for school aged children and this will be in the Music Room.
I hope that many children and families are able to make this wonderful opportunity to gather and connect as a community.
Another piece of news to share with you is that volunteers are now allowed to join us onsite to assist in our learning programs. Your child’s teacher will communicate with you as to how you may be of assistance to them. All volunteers must have a current Working with Children’s Check (WWCC), updated Responding to Risk, Harm, Abuse and Neglect in an Educational Context (RRHAN-EC) and a current certificate of COVID-19 immunisation.
Child Safety
I will soon send out a form to consult with parents and caregivers about the school crossing in Brunswick St. I am deeply concerned about the level of driver inattention and disregard for road rules, especially whilst approaching and moving through the school crossing. Whilst some of the people who are not respecting the road rules are not members of our community, many of the risks come from our own families. This includes not stopping to allow children to cross the road, speeding through the 25 km/h zone and doing a three point turn at the crossing.
A road safety officer will be visiting St Monica’s next week to observe the current situation and make some recommendations about the crossing. I have also asked for the support from SAPOL to monitor the situation during the peak periods. My worst fear is that a child is hurt in any way. Please take the few extra minutes to make, and model to your child, the safe choice whilst driving in Brunswick Street.
Have a wonderful week ahead,
Emily Sayer

This week the Church Celebrated the feast of Pentecost. Classes haave been learning all about this feast day and the significance for our lives today. 'Pentecost' comes from the Greek word “pentecoste’ meaning fiftieth. Fifty days after Easter, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit upon the disciples as the gift. He filled them with the Holy Spirit, which gifted them with the courage, wisdom and passion to continue the mission he started on earth and thus the beginning of Christianity as we know it today. Before Pentecost the disciples did not understand the things that Jesus explained to them, but with the Holy Spirit they not only understood but they themselves were understood by people who listened to them. The fruits of the Holy Spirit; love, peace, faithfulness, goodness, gentleness, self-control, kindness and patience are virtues we are called to share with others through our words and actions. It is through our actions of these virtues that we see the Holy Spirit alive and celebrated amongst us.
When the Spirit is alive,
women, men, and children come together with joy.
When the Spirit is recognised,
refugees are welcomed and immigrants supported.
When the Spirit is felt,
compassion rules and the downcast are encouraged.
When the Spirit is experienced,
the hungry are fed, and those who live on the street are housed.
When the Spirit is embraced,
those without hope find the powerful love of God. Amen.
Congratulations to the Leap family (Leon R/1M) for the arrival of Lily into their family on 24 May 2022
