Term 2 Week 1
Welcome back for an exciting Term 2. We have had some beautiful weather, so the children have been able to enjoy playing outside during recess and lunch time. Hopefully this will continue for the next few weeks. We also welcome four new students and their families to St Monica’s. We have Vivian and Sosha in Reception, Satiya in Year 1 and Lewis in Year 2. Welcome and we look forward to getting to know you.
During the week, we received the sad news that Sr Catherine Clark RSJ passed away. Sr Catherine was an inspiring educator and leader in Catholic Education South Australia. She spent time teaching at several Josephite schools and was also principal of Mary MacKillop College. One of her most significant roles was being the chair of the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools. Sr Catherine will be deeply missed by her family and the Josephite community. As we are a very proud Josephite community, we will have a representation from St Monica’s attend her funeral.
Last week, I was very proud to attend the Dawn Service at the Walkerville RSL ANZAC Day Remembrance with three of our senior students last week. Angus, Archer and Aaliyah represented our community with dignity and respect as they lay a wreath for all those who have paid the ultimate price in the pursuit of peace. I thank these students, and their families, for attending this very important service.
We are busily preparing to honour and celebrate our mothers and those who are mother figures in our students’ lives with a delicious breakfast and followed by liturgy on Friday 10 May. Breakfast will be held in the library and service will begin at 8.15am. Please enter via the back doors of the library. I hope you can stay with us for the liturgy where we have some special blessings for all you wonderful women.
We have been working very closely with the Walkerville Council and our neighbours to come up with some solutions to the concerns about the driveways being blocked by our families and parking that is not legal. The council now has put signs at the Kiss and Drop zone that limits families waiting there to two minutes. The aim of this is to have the flow of the traffic to be steady and not block the street or the crossing. Brunswick St has ample parking for families and teachers supervise the children up until 3.20pm. Please be respectful of our neighbours and be a positive and a safe role model for your child.
God’s blessings,
Emily Sayer
Issue 3 Book Club leaflets are going home today. Please note that orders close on Tuesday 14th May. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Overdue Library Books and Readers – Over the holidays, the library shelves were checked to locate any overdue library books which may have been put back on the shelves without going through the ‘return’ process. There are still many books and readers which are overdue and notices for these will go home next week. Please look at home on shelves and in school bags and if found, return them to the library. If the books cannot be located, please let the library staff know so they can be removed from your child’s Library record.
Premier’s Reading Challenge – Congratulations to those students who have already completed their challenge. Only 12 books are required to be read to complete the challenge, 8 from the Premier’s Reading Challenge booklist and 4 own choice. The Challenge officially ends at the beginning of September. Completed PRC Reading Records can be left at the library.
Happy reading!
Shining a light on our old scholars! [💡] [🔦]
We are very proud of St Monica’s old scholars Madi and Felicia who graduated from university this week.
Madi received a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) with First Class Honours from University of Adelaide.
Felicia received a double degree of Bachelor of Education (secondary) and Bachelor of Science.
Congratulations to both old scholars on achieving their goals and following their passions.
You are all invited to Government House on its open day
The parent community has established a private group on Facebook that facilitates the trading of second-hand uniform items.
Please visit www.facebook.com/groups/stmonicasbuyswapsell and request to join the group if you are interested.
The page is ideal for selling items in good condition that your child has outgrown, or to sell items if your child is moving on. Simply post images and your contact details. Alternatively, you can join the group to take advantage of the pre-loved items that become available.
For those of you who are not on Facebook, please contact the P&F pandf.stmonicas@gmail.com and they will assist you with the sale of items.
Please note the sale of old-style uniform items is not allowed. St Monica's Parish School does not manage this page and takes no responsibility for any private sales.
We acknowledge the Kaurna people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which St Monica’s learn, work and play.
May we walk gently on this land acknowledging the Kaurna people's deep spiritual connection with their country.
We pay our respects to Kaurna elders past and present and commit to the ongoing journey of Reconciliation.
