Specialist Learning Areas

Students at St Monica's have specialist programs in Music, Italian and Physical Education.

Music

We have a vibrant music program that gives each child the chance to explore the joy, beauty and challenge of music. At St Monica's, all students in Year 3 learn to play the recorder, and students in Year 5 learn to play the ukulele. All Year 6 students also perform in the annual Catholic Schools Music Festival. Our Community Piano – painted by children – is available to be played when they have free time. We also offer families the opportunity for children to access private music tuition during school time.

Italian

Learning a language opens up so many possibilities and helps students develop more proficient literacy skills. That is why all students from Reception to Year 6 at St Monica’s learn Italian.

Through their Italian lessons, our students learn to listen to, speak, read and write the language through games, songs, role-plays and dance. What students learn in Italian is integrated with classroom work and programs as they learn about language as well as the culture of the Italian people, while comparing it with their own culture. To reinforce the understanding of culture, students at St Monica’s participate in the Adelaide Italian Festival and Italian Day at school.

Sports and Physical Education

Students from Reception to Year 6 participate in an innovative sports program, allowing them to grow and develop their skills in a safe environment. Our students in Years 3 to Year 6 participate in a broad range of interschool sporting carnivals to challenge themselves against students from other schools.
